Theatre NewsUpdated Monday 25th November 2013 as cast and tour dates announced:

Produced by Bill Kenwright, a new production of Fame the Musical is to tour the UK in 2014, directed by Gary Lloyd.

Lloyd, whose credits include Thriller Live, is also choreographer of the production. The show will open at the New Wimbledon Theatre on 20th February, 2014.

Initially performed in London in 1995, Fame, which is based on the film and television series of the same name, has appeared in the West End seven times.

Fame had its world premiere in Florida, USA in 1988 before transferring to an Off-Broadway venue in 2003. The show was conceived by David de Silva, one of the original producers of the film. After the film’s success, a television series began running for six seasons. The musical evolved away from the film and TV adaptations, and although there are similarities, their scripts and book are essentially different. The score for the musical was entirely re-written and the title track only included as an add-on.

The show first arrived in London in 1995, opening to primarily positive reviews. After beginning a UK wide tour in 1996, the show was brought back and revived in the West End in 1997. This production was nominated for two Olivier Awards.

Since the first production in 1995 the show has enjoyed seven separate West End runs; the longest at the Aldwych Theatre from 2002 to 2006. The show has also been on at the Cambridge Theatre, the Prince of Wales, the Shaftesbury Theatre and the Victoria Palace Theatre. The show also continues to tour regularly.
