If you’re looking for a show that’s magical, heartwarming, and bursting with energy, Matilda the Musical at the Liverpool Empire is the perfect choice. Based on Roald Dahl’s beloved book and brought to life by the genius team of Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin, this award-winning musical is a must-see. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the story or new to the world of Matilda Wormwood, here are five reasons why you simply can’t miss this incredible production.
A Story That Captures the Imagination
At its heart, Matilda the Musical is a tale of courage, intelligence, and resilience. It follows the young and brilliantly clever Matilda as she faces off against her neglectful parents and the terrifying Miss Trunchbull, armed only with her wit, intelligence, and a touch of magic. The story is filled with the humour and darkness you’d expect from Roald Dahl, making it a captivating watch for children and adults alike.
A Breathtaking Score by Tim Minchin
The music and lyrics, crafted by comedian and musician Tim Minchin, are nothing short of genius. From the catchy energy of Revolting Children to the heartbreaking beauty of When I Grow Up, each song is packed with emotion and creativity. The score elevates the story, drawing you into Matilda’s world with every note. You’ll find yourself humming the tunes long after the show ends.
A Visual Feast
The staging and choreography in Matilda the Musical are truly something to behold. The set is vibrant, dynamic, and cleverly designed, with oversized books, school desks, and chalkboards creating a world that feels straight out of Dahl’s imagination. The choreography by Peter Darling is high-energy and inventive, with children and adults alike throwing themselves into the routines with complete abandon. Every scene is a feast for the eyes.
An Unforgettable Cast
The talented cast of Matilda the Musical brings these iconic characters to life with incredible precision. From current productions in London and elsewhere, the child actors playing Matilda are nothing short of extraordinary, delivering performances that are equal parts powerful and endearing. And, of course, Miss Trunchbull – a role traditionally played by a man – is a show-stealing villain who somehow makes you laugh and shudder in equal measure.
