News, Reviews & Interviews in January 2016

January 2016 marked an exciting start to the year for theatre in the UK, with a wide array of productions across the London West End, Off West End, and on tour. The month’s offerings highlighted the vibrant diversity and creativity that define the UK theatre scene.

London West End

The London West End, synonymous with world-class theatre, featured an impressive lineup in January 2016. Long-running favorites like “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Misérables” continued to captivate audiences with their timeless appeal and spectacular productions. These stalwarts of Theatreland provided reliable box office draws and continued to enchant both new and returning theatre-goers.

Among the newer productions, “Kinky Boots” stood out, having opened the previous autumn. With its infectious score by Cyndi Lauper and heartwarming story, it continued to attract large audiences, establishing itself as a must-see musical. “Matilda the Musical,” another relatively recent addition to the West End, delighted audiences with its imaginative staging and the clever lyrics of Tim Minchin.

Off West End

Off West End theatres, known for their bold and innovative productions, also had a compelling selection of shows in January 2016. The Almeida Theatre’s production of “Bakkhai,” starring Ben Whishaw and Bertie Carvel, was a standout. This modern adaptation of Euripides’ classic Greek tragedy offered a fresh and provocative take on the ancient text, blending traditional elements with contemporary relevance.

The Donmar Warehouse presented a revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, directed by Josie Rourke and featuring Dominic West and Janet McTeer. This production was lauded for its intense performances and elegant staging, breathing new life into Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of the French novel.

Touring Productions

Touring productions in January 2016 ensured that high-quality theatre reached audiences outside London. The National Theatre’s production of “Jane Eyre,” a bold and inventive adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s novel, embarked on a nationwide tour. This production was praised for its imaginative staging and powerful performances, making it a highlight for regional theatre-goers.

Another notable touring production was the musical “Billy Elliot.” This heartwarming tale of a young boy’s dream to become a ballet dancer continued to resonate with audiences across the UK, combining powerful storytelling with exhilarating dance sequences.

Conclusion

January 2016 was a vibrant month for theatre in the UK, showcasing the diversity and richness of performances available. The London West End dazzled with both long-running favorites and newer hits, Off West End theatres pushed the boundaries of conventional theatre, and touring productions brought exceptional performances to regional audiences. This dynamic start to the year set the stage for another year of outstanding theatre in the UK.
