News, Reviews & Interviews June 2017

June 2017 was an exhilarating month for theatre in London, with a rich variety of productions across the West End, Off West End, and touring circuits. Theatre enthusiasts enjoyed a vibrant mix of classic hits, innovative new shows, and touring productions that brought the magic of London’s theatre scene to audiences beyond the city.

West End Highlights

The West End continued to shine in June 2017, showcasing its blend of beloved classics and exciting new productions. Long-running favorites like “The Phantom of the Opera” at Her Majesty’s Theatre and “Les Misérables” at the Queen’s Theatre maintained their allure, captivating both regular theatre-goers and newcomers with their enduring stories and grand productions.

One of the notable additions to the West End in June was the premiere of “Girl from the North Country” at the Old Vic. Written and directed by Conor McPherson, this new musical featured the songs of Bob Dylan and quickly gained attention for its hauntingly beautiful integration of Dylan’s music with a poignant narrative set in Depression-era America.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” at the Palace Theatre continued to be a major draw, enthralling audiences with its magical effects and intricate plot that extended J.K. Rowling’s beloved wizarding world. The two-part play remained one of the hottest tickets in town.

Off West End Innovation

Off West End venues were bustling with creativity and innovation in June 2017. The Almeida Theatre’s “Hamlet,” directed by Robert Icke and starring Andrew Scott, continued to receive critical acclaim for its modern, emotionally charged interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy.

The Donmar Warehouse presented “The Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee Takes Oral Evidence on Whitehall’s Relationship with Kids Company,” a verbatim play by Hadley Fraser and Josie Rourke. This production, based on real parliamentary hearings, offered a gripping and timely examination of politics and accountability.

The Young Vic’s “Yerma,” directed by Simon Stone and starring Billie Piper, continued to captivate audiences with its modern adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s play. Piper’s powerful performance and the production’s innovative staging were widely praised.

Touring Productions

Touring productions in June 2017 played a crucial role in bringing the magic of London theatre to a broader audience across the UK. “War Horse,” renowned for its extraordinary puppetry and poignant storytelling, continued its successful tour, touching hearts and minds in various cities.

“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” also remained a significant draw on its national tour. The show’s inventive staging and compelling narrative about a young boy’s quest to solve a neighborhood mystery captivated theatre-goers far beyond the West End.

The National Theatre’s touring production of “Jane Eyre,” adapted by Sally Cookson, offered a fresh and dynamic retelling of Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel. The production was praised for its imaginative direction and strong performances, bringing the beloved story to life in a new and engaging way.

June 2017 was a vibrant month for London theatre, showcasing the city’s rich and diverse theatrical landscape. The West End dazzled with its mix of classic hits and new premieres, Off West End venues pushed the boundaries of traditional theatre with innovative and thought-provoking productions, and touring shows ensured that the enchantment of London’s theatre scene reached audiences far and wide. This month highlighted London’s status as a global theatre capital, offering a dynamic array of performances for every theatre enthusiast.
