WICKED, the West End and Broadway musical sensation that tells the incredible untold story of the Witches of Oz, is pleased to announce that Miss Saigon star Alistair Brammer will play Fiyero at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre from Monday 22 July 2019.

Alistair Brammer (Fiyero) made his Broadway debut in 2017 as ‘Chris’ in Cameron Mackintosh’s revival of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s Miss Saigon. He made his professional West End debut as ‘Marius’ in Boublil and Schönberg’s Les Misérables in 2009. His other West End roles include ‘Billy Narracott’ in War Horse, directed by Marianne Elliot and Tom Morris, and ‘Chris’ in the award-winning London revival of Miss Saigon (for which he was nominated ‘Best Actor in a Musical’ at the 2015 WhatsOnStage Awards). In October 2010, Alistair played ‘Jean Prouvaire’ in the 25th Anniversary Concert of Les Misérables at The O2 and, in September 2014, he played ‘Chris’ in the 25th Anniversary Gala performance of Miss Saigon at London’s Prince Edward Theatre. Alistair’s television and film appearances include ‘Jack Diamond’ in 18 episodes of Casualty (BBC), ‘Jean Prouvaire’ in Les Misérables (Working Title), directed by Tom Hooper, and ‘Freddy’ in the forthcoming Medieval with Ben Foster and Michael Caine.

David Witts will play his final performances as Fiyero on Saturday 20 July 2019. Further casting to be announced.

Michael McCabe, Executive Producer (UK) of WICKED said: “We are delighted to welcome Alistair Brammer back to the West End following his great success on Broadway as ‘Chris’ in Miss Saigon and we very much look forward to him joining the new cast of Wicked which will lead us into our fourteenth year in the West End.”

“Packed with wit, storming songs and beautiful costumes” (The Guardian), WICKED is already the 9th longest running musical in West End history. Winner of over 100 major awards, including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and ten theatregoer-voted WhatsOnStage Awards (winning ‘Best West End Show’ on three occasions), the classic musical has now been seen by almost 10 million people in London alone.

Based on the acclaimed, best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED imagines an ingenious backstory and future possibilities to the lives of L. Frank Baum’s beloved characters from ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ and reveals the decisions and events that shape the destinies of two unlikely University friends on their journey to becoming Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

WICKED has music and lyrics by multi Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Godspell; Disney’s Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Enchanted and, for DreamWorks, The Prince of Egypt) and is based on the novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ by Gregory Maguire and adapted for the stage by Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life). Musical staging is by Tony Award-winner Wayne Cilento and direction by two-time Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello.

Wicked and The Woodland Trust Mark Eighth Year of Partnership 2018

The cast and company of the West End and Broadway musical sensation WICKED are once again aiming to raise thousands of pounds to boost the Woodland Trust’s tree planting initiatives.

2018 marks the eighth year of a partnership between the award-winning musical and the charity. WICKED has to date raised over £77,000, directly helping the Trust and enabling over 51,000 trees to be planted. It has done this through various initiatives, such as fundraising photobooths at performances at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, auctioning exclusive WICKED experiences and through the generosity of its audiences.

This year, alongside its special fundraising Wicked Day on Wednesday 31 October, WICKED in partnership with the Woodland Trust is calling on the public and audiences to plant trees this autumn.

Woodland Trust Director of Fundraising Karl Mitchell said: “Over the course of this partnership, the Wicked cast and company have done some amazing work to support us through their creative fundraising endeavours. It is a real achievement that they have helped us plant so many trees. This year we are delighted that they will do so once again. Alongside this, we are looking to harness this interest and encourage people to plant trees this autumn in their gardens, at planting events and on their allotments. Thanks to the Wicked partnership, people can get ten percent off selected trees by going to our Woodland Trust Shop. Every tree planted will provide cleaner air, boost health and wellbeing and create vital wildlife corridors, much needed as 60% of the UK’s plant and animal species have declined in the last 50 years.”

Michael McCabe, Executive Producer (UK) of WICKED added: “We are delighted to support the important conservation work of The Woodland Trust. Their protection and creation of incredible woodland spaces – that are free to enjoy – benefit people, wildlife and multiple plant species and we are exceptionally proud to have raised funds to plant over 51,000 new trees in the UK to date. This year, we are hoping to make it our biggest fund-raiser yet by calling on people to ‘do something wicked’ and plant trees this autumn.”

This year, WICKED will for the first time be offering an exclusive Polaroid-photo opportunity with some of the musical’s cast members in the foyer of the Apollo Victoria Theatre before the matinee performance on Wednesday 31 October, with an optional donation to the Woodland Trust. There will also be an auction offering exclusive WICKED experiences, such as afternoon tea with members of the cast.

The Woodland Trust is offering an exclusive discount to followers who would like to purchase a tree from the Trust’s website. Go to: https://shop.woodlandtrust.org.uk/ and use the discount code WICKED.*

Trees that have been directly funded by money raised by WICKED have helped turn Heartwood Forest, St Albans into a thriving wood. This year the money will go towards the Trust’s More Woods project – helping people plant trees across the country.

Winners announced for The 2018 Wicked Young Writers Awards

June 21, 2018 Last updated: April 26, 2020 5:30 pm By Admin

Wicked Young Writers AwardsTHE 2018 WICKED YOUNG WRITER AWARDS, presented in association with the National Literacy Trust, today (Thursday 21 June 2018) announced its winners during a ceremony involving 117 shortlisted finalists and their families and teachers at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, home of the award-winning musical WICKED.

Amongst this year’s finalist entries were stories, poems and non-fiction writing that were both compelling and intense, often with dark themes and dramatic twists. The older category stories highlighted gender discussions regarding female roles and stories influenced by our current affairs with LGBTQ+ activism and gun control issues in the United States of America. Subjects reflected poignant references to family and love, with the importance of friendship which knows no bounds. One theme that bridged age categories was the awareness of an ageing population with many stories about dementia and old age; often a difficult subject which was treated with maturity, and respect without any inferences of self-pity.

Now in its eighth year, the Awards encourage young people aged 5-25 years to use writing as a way of expressing themselves, producing unique and original pieces of prose and poetry. This year saw over 4,500 submissions with a rise in entries from individuals and primary schools in the 8-10 age category and from the 15-17 age category.

Championed by Patron Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall, the judges include writer, broadcaster and former Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families Ed Balls; and writer and first Young People’s Laureate for London Caleb Femi. Author and illustrator of the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ books Cressida Cowell returns as Head Judge for the fourth consecutive year, together with long-standing judges Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust and Michael McCabe, Executive Producer (UK) of WICKED. Nicky Cox MBE, Editor in Chief of First News (a joint sponsor of the Award prize for the ‘FOR GOOD’ category) is a guest judge for this category.

Greg James, just announced as the new presenter of BBC Radio 1’s flagship Breakfast Show, hosted the ceremony with prizes presented by Head Judge Cressida Cowell and the panel of prestigious judges.

Nicky Cox MBE, Editor in Chief of First News comments on this year’s winning stories: ‘In all categories I saw an unbelievable standard of writing. There are definitely some authors of the future here; their writing was really descriptive and compelling.’

Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust comments on this year’s finalists’ entries: “Every year, the Wicked Young Writer Awards inspire wonderfully creative and thoughtful writing – and this year was no exception. The Awards give us a unique insight into what matters most to children and young people today, and this year we were inundated with heartfelt entries on older generations, grandparents and memory loss. Well done to everyone who took part in this year’s Awards and congratulations to all of the finalists. We hope the Awards will continue to give voice to your ideas and passions.”

The top three schools that submitted the most entries were also announced and have won a Creative Writing Workshop for their school for up to 30 students delivered by WICKED’s education team.
