Matilda The MusicalThe RSC’s brilliant new award-winning musical version of Roald Dahl’s Matilda is a magnificent success.

Following a sensational sell-out season at The Courtyard Theatre, the RSC’s production of Matilda The Musical moved to the Cambridge Theatre in London’s West End in October 2011.

Roald Dahl’s much-loved story bursts into life on stage in this new and innovative musical version by Dennis Kelly and award-winning musician and comedian Tim Minchin. Adults and children will be enchanted and thrilled by this spectacular story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

Her parents think Matilda is just a nuisance, and she thinks, quite rightly, they are only interested in watching telly. Life is no better at school, where the terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull frightens students and teachers. Then one day Matilda discovers she has a very special power and decides that it is time for the grown-ups to be taught a lesson, as the children revolt…

The Cambridge Theatre LondonCambridge Theatre Brief History
The Cambridge Theatre is an established West End theatre, on a junction of streets on Earlham Street facing Seven Dials, in the London Borough of Camden, built between 1929-30. It was designed by Wimperis, Simpson and Guthrie with an interior designed partly by Serge Chermayeff (an interior designer with the firm of Waring & Gillow), and bronze friezes by sculptor Anthony Gibbons Grinling. The theatre was constructed for Bertie Meyer, a backer of plays.

The theatre is built primarily of steel and concrete and is notable for its elegant design. The theatre was refurbished in 1950 with the original gold and silver decor being (sadly) painted over in red, and candelabras and chandeliers being added. However, in 1987, in order to restore the original d’cor, the theatre was again refurbished, this time by Carl Toms. The theatre has a circular entrance foyer, with q Grinling bronze frieze showing nude figures in exercise poses, this somewhat erotic theme continues into the main foyer, with dancing nudes, marble pilaster uplighters and concealed lighting.
