The Prince of Wales Theatre in 2010

The Prince of Wales Theatre London
The first theatre at this location was The Prince’s Theatre, designed by C J Phipps and opening in January 1884. It was subsequently demolished in 1937 to make way for the larger present theatre. On 17th June, 1937 the foundation stone of the current theatre was laid by Gracie Fields, and the theatre, named as it is now The Prince of Wales, was opened on 27th October, 1937.

Alterations were made to the stage in 1963 and the theatre was reopened on 28th March, 1964. The expansive Stalls Bar is located under the stalls seating area and has a dance floor originally designed for tea dances. Productions here have included The World of Susie Wong in 1959, Funny Girl in 1966 starring Barbra Streisand, Sweet Charity in 1967 and Guys and Dolls in 1985. In January 1989 the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Aspects of Love opened at The Prince of Wales Theatre, and run for 1,325 performances. On 18th August 2007, Mamma Mia! became the longest-running show ever at the Prince of Wales, overtaking the previous record held by Aspects of Love with 1,326 performances.

With both hosts at the 2019 Whatsonstage Awards, Vicky Vox and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, nominated for awards themselves, the winners of their respective categories were – quite cleverly, I thought – not printed on either of their cue cards. Vox’s style of presenting drew different reactions from this year’s attendees, not least when she called out a member of the audience for mobile telephone usage, tearing into the phone user for not being “in the moment”. The ‘Wossies’ once more included … [Read more...]

18th Annual Whatsonstage Awards at the Prince of Wales Theatre

February 26, 2018 Last updated: April 8, 2021 5:58 pm By Chris Omaweng

42nd Street London

I had, in jest, referred to The 18th Annual Whatsonstage Awards as The Most Assertive Social Media Campaign Awards 2018, a sentiment shared by The Ferryman’s Fra Fee. Picking up the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Play, he mused that if Nathan Lane ran a Twitter account, he’d most likely have won that category instead. As for the musicals, 42nd Street and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie dominated, picking up seven awards between them – in a seemingly ever darker and more uncertain world, … [Read more...]
