The press night of Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined will take place tonight at the Criterion Theatre in London’s West End. Following nearly 2 weeks of previews, Close To You officially opens in the West End tonight and the theatre critics will be on-hand to give their verdict on the re-named musical following its transfer into London.
Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined is a celebration of the songbook of Burt Bacharach, redesigned so that generations old and new can enjoy over 30 of the singer/song-writer’s greatest hits as though they’re hearing them for the very first time.
Directed by Oliver Award winner Steven Hoggett, performed by a young group of multi-talented musicians and led by the visionary composer and performer Kyle Riabko, the show features thrillingly fresh yet beautifully faithful re-interpretations of Bacharach’s classic songs. Fall in love with Bacharach all over again in a dynamic, uplifting and magical journey through over 30 classic hits including: ‘Alfie’, ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’, ‘I Say A Little Prayer’, ‘Walk On By’, ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’, ‘What’s New Pussycat?’ And, of course, ‘Close To You’.
The show has the approval of Burt Bacharach, who proclaimed it “brilliant” after seeing it and went on to say that “Kyle has done something truly unique with my music. I loved it!”
Close To You features Music by Burt Bacharach and Lyrics by Hal David and others, and has Set Design by Christine Jones and Brett Banakis, Costume Design by Matthew Wright, Lighting Design by Tim Lutkin and Sound Design by Richard Brooker. The show was conceived by Kyle Riabko and David Lane Seltzer following Riabko’s introduction to Bacharach at an LA recording studio. It premiered at The New York Theater Workshop in 2013 under its original title, What’s It All About: Bacharach Reimagined, and became the longest-running show in the theatre’s history.
It made its UK premiere earlier this summer with a sold-out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 15th July 2015 (previews from 3rd July) to 5th September 2015. It was announced last month that the production would transfer to the West End’s Criterion Theatre, becoming the first new production at the venue following the closure of The 39 Steps, which ran for nine years there. Renamed as Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined, the musical will play a strictly limited season from 3rd October 2015 to 10th January 2016.
It is produced in the West End by David Lane Seltzer for Entertainment 360.
