It has been announced today that Footloose The Musical will tour the UK in 2016.
The UK tour will open at The Spa, Bridlington on Friday 29th January 2016, where performances will continue until Saturday 6th February before the production moves on to the next leg of the tour. It is set to entertain audiences in Edinburgh, Cardiff, Manchester, London, Liverpool, Brighton and many more places, with the tour’s final date currently set for the Bristol Hippodrome (1st-6th August 2016).
Gareth Gates stars as Willard from 29th January to 16th April 2016, and will then reprise the role from 20th June 2016. Further casting news will be announced soon.
Footloose tells the story of city boy Ren, who is forced to move to a rural town in America where dancing is banned. All hell breaks out as Ren breaks loose and soon has the whole town up on its feet.
The show includes such classic 80’s hits ‘Holding Out for a Hero’, ‘Almost Paradise’, ‘Let’s Hear it for the Boy’, and of course, ‘Footloose’.
Footloose The Musical is based on the popular 1984 film of the same name, starring Kevin Bacon. It was adapted for the stage by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie and premiered on Broadway’s Richard Rogers Theatre on 22nd October 1998 – exactly seventeen years ago today!
The musical first appeared in the UK when it embarked on a national tour in 2004, and made its West End debut at the Novello Theatre in April 2006. Several touring productions have since followed and it was last seen at the Playhouse Theatre, London in 2008.
Footloose features music by Tom Snow and lyrics by Dean Pitchford, with additional music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman. The UK tour production is directed and choreographed by Racky Plews, and produced by Sell A Door Theatre Company and Runaway Entertainment.
Gareth Gates rose to fame as the runner-up in the 2001 season of Pop Idol and went on to sell over 5 million records worldwide. He made his stage debut in 2009, taking over the lead role of Joseph from Lee Mead in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His other stage credits include playing Marius in Les Miserables (25th Anniversary Tour, West End) and Warner in Legally Blonde (UK Tour).
