Hairspray is playing at the New Wimbledon Theatre in London this week from Monday 2nd November to Saturday 7th November 2015, with the first of eight performances set to take place tonight.
Freya Sutton stars as Tracy Turnblad, returning to the role after playing Tracy in the previous UK and Ireland 2013 tour. The production also stars stage and screen actor Tony Maudsley (Benidorm, South Pacific UK Tour) as Edna Turnblad, alongside TV presenter and stage/screen actress Claire Sweeney (Chicago, Legally Blonde, Tell Me On A Sunday) as Velma Von Tussle, former Blue Peter presenter and Olivier Award-nominated actor Peter Duncan (The Card, Barnum) as Wilbur Turnblad and former X Factor finalist Brenda Edwards (Chicago, We Will Rock You) as Motormouth Maybelle.

Welcome to the 60’s where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams. You Can’t Stop The Beat as she sets out to dance her way onto national TV with The Nicest Kids In Town. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way!
Hairspray is the multi award-winning musical based on the hit 1988 film of the same name. It features a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. It premiered on Broadway in 2002 and won eight Tony Awards, making its West End debut at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2007 and repeating its success with four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical.
The musical has since played all over the world, including South Africa, Japan, South Korea, China, Dubai and Australia, and embarked on numerous national and international tours. It was adapted into a musical film in 2007, starring Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad alongside John Travolta (Edna Turnblad), Christopher Walken (Wilbur Turnblad), Queen Latifah (Motormouth Maybelle), Michelle Pheiffer (Velma Von Tussle), Zac Efron (Link Larkin) and James Marsden (Corny Collins).
The UK tour of Hairspray is an extensive 40-week tour that will visit 25 venues across the UK in 2015/16. The new production opened at the Leicester Curve on 9th September 2015 and continued on to play venues in Oxford, Northampton, Worcestershire, Liverpool, Hull, Manchester, ahead of its week-long run here in London.
Hairspray is produced by Mark Goucher and Laurence Myers, Tom O’Connell for QNQ, Just For Laughs Theatricals, Gale King Productions and Curve Theatre, Leicester. It is directed by Paul Kerryson, with choreography by Drew McOnie, musical direction by Ben Atkinson, sound design by Ben Harrison, lighting design by Philip Gladwell, set design by Paul Moore and costume design by Takis.

Tony Maudsley, Claire Sweeney and Peter Duncan are set to leave the production after a final performance at Newcastle Theatre Royal on 30th January 2016. The roles of Edna, Velma and Wilbur for the remainder of the tour are still to be announced.
