The RSC’s multi-award-winning production transferred into the West End in 2011 following the success of its original run in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and after an initial preview period from 25th October, officially opened at the Cambridge Theatre on 24th November 2011. It won rave reviews and an array of theatrical awards, and remains one of the most popular shows in town – it recently welcomed its two millionth audience member.
Matilda The Musical is based on the classic children’s story by Roald Dahl. The musical adaption was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and features a book by playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, and direction by Matthew Warchus. It made its world premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon in November 2010, where it played to sold-out audiences during its 12-week run. Many of the original adult cast reprised their roles when the production received its West End transfer in 2011, including the critically acclaimed Bertie Carvel as Miss Trunchbull.
Matilda made its Broadway debut at the Shubert Theatre in April 2013, produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and The Dodgers, and subsequently opened in Sydney, Australia earlier this year. It was recently announced that the musical will play a limited season in Melbourne from March 2016.
