TWO PRODUCTIONS OPEN IN TWO MAJOR VENUES APRIL 2016
- TANHÄUSER AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE
- JV2 2016 AT SADLERS WELLS
In what is predicting to be a significant year for the internationally acclaimed Jasmin Vardimon Company, two major productions showcasing their work open in London at the end of April 2016. They come after the recent announcement of the company’s brand new adaptation of the classic fairy tale, Pinocchio.
On April 26th, The Royal Opera presents the second revival of Tim Albery’s production of Wagner’s great examination of sensuality and spirituality, Tannhäuser. The production opens with the Venusberg bacchanale spellbindingly choreographed by Jasmin Vardimon – described by the Daily Telegraph as “hypnotic” and by The Independent as “painting a vivid narrative”, Vardimon’s dance did much to take the original 2010 production on to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Opera and Musical Theatre and has helped bring about this eagerly awaited revival.
On April 22nd, a few days before the Tannhäuser opening, Jasmin Vardimon’s professional development company, JV2 takes to the stage of the Lillian Baylis Studio at Sadler’s Wells. JV2 2016 is a programme of both new and established work that showcases the immense talent in the current company. With the mission to develop, encourage and cultivate young talent and young audiences, Jasmin Vardimon created JV2 as an educational initiative aimed at the recently qualified or those already working professionally in order to deliver a Professional Development Certificate. This year’s JV2, are an ensemble of 16 young, talented international dancers, hand-picked by Artistic Director Jasmin Vardimon.
JV2 2016 features the work of Jasmin Vardimon herself and that of current Jasmin Vardimon Company members Esteban Fourmi and Aoi Nakamura (with their company AΦE) and former company member Vinicius Salles. Vardimon’s work (in between) was first created for the National Youth Dance Company in 2013 and premiered at Sadlers Wells. Trapped in flux between the force of the group and the power of the individual, the work echoes relationships between humans and the natural environment. Ashford-based AΦE presents a work that questions the notion of presence and the realms of studio to performance and Vinicius Salles offers an inquiry of social judgments, acceptance of differences, and superficial assumptions of the “other”.
Jasmin Vardimon says: “I am delighted to have two shows presented at two major London theatre’s within the space of a week. This display the breadth of work that the company produces and the activities we undertake above and beyond our core productions. Tannhäuser presents the company work alongside the ROH orchestra and some of the world’s finest opera talents. Through JV2 we support emerging artists in their first steps in the professional world. I’m very proud of their achievements and thrilled about both runs”.
