I’m sure we have all been guiltily of murmuring, upon seeing something truly impressive, that most acidic of phrases: ‘I could have done that.’ Well, I can promise you that that phrase will not be said anywhere near the Udderbelly Stage on the Southbank while Closer holds its residence.
This is a show which puts theatrical gimmicks to the side, and instead presents to you five incredibly talented acrobats displaying their ability with ease. There are scenes involving rings, chairs and rope – that’s the extent of the props. It’s a minimalist circus executed to perfection.
But, that said, it’s not merely the acrobatics for which one must attend, for it is a truly funny show. As each performer seamlessly moves onto the stage there are perfectly pitched moments of humour between the acrobats; allowing for the personality of the performers to shine through. There is also a routine involving more hoops than I could count and it will have you cheering with unbridled delight.
The title of the production is an interesting one. I believe it relates to the main theme of the performance, that of connection. Often the performers will be hugging one another, gripping one another, holding one another. The show, by its very nature, is one which utilises and depends upon physical connection; but, these are performers wanting to convey more, they want to convey emotional connection. Always smiling and always present, this is a show presented by a family.

Closer is mesmerising, enchanting and beautiful. It’s a show which begs the question at what precise moment should one clap, because in truth one should be clapping from the moment the curtain goes up to the moment it goes down. It’s a show which I believe one must see, and I would recommend you head to the Udderbelly immediately, grab a drink from the bar, a ticket from the box office and indulge in the presentation of pure, uninhabited talent.

Get up close and personal with four incredible circus performers.
Witness acrobatic mastery at its most extreme. See unrivalled acrobatic moves, and the muscles it takes to perform them; gasp at effortless circus stunts, and learn how many years it takes to perfect them; marvel at graceful aerial spectacles above you, and see the rope marks graze the aerialists’ skin.
Internationally acclaimed, multi -award winning circus company Circa (The Return, Opus at the Barbican; Beyond at London Wonderground) wrench back the curtain with Close Up. Nothing is off limits in their most intimate show yet.
Closer by Circa has been made especially (and only!) for Udderbelly, our upside-down purple cow, and has already wowed audiences at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Udderbelly festival Hong Kong.
