Coming to an arena near you (one of 14 from Portsmouth to Aberdeen) a musical spectacular with original script by God based on his best seller the Book of Genesis. It’s a story of creation, of Original Sin, of waterfalls, of real flowers, of serpents, of apples and, of course, naked ambition. As well as song and dance and special effects on a biblical scale there’s going to be flying. Real flying. Flying on stage with no strings attached – we are promised.
“It’s magic“, says director Racky Plews: so the show combines magic with creationism.
Heaven On Earth is the brain child of creator (ahem) Sarah Jeffs who came up with the concept, wrote the book, composed the music and is lyricist to boot. Now living in Nottingham she originally hails from Connecticut and got the idea when reading bedtime stories to her young children. The music deploys the lush orchestrations that we have become so familiar with though shows such as Game of Thrones – via Arranger Geoff Alexander – and the songs will be afforded all the melodious panache of those seasoned musical performers Kerry Ellis (known as the Leading Lady of Musicals she originated the role of Meat in We Will Rock You, played Elphaba in Wicked, West End and Broadway, as well as many other starring roles) and Hugh Maynard (whose many leading roles include Sweeney Todd, The Lion King, and Miss Saigon). When asked to give a sneak preview of the kind of costumes that Adam and Eve might wear Ellis trolled us with a body-suit teaser. The show follows the Adam and Eve journey – born into paradise, tempted to sin, punished by God and… sorry, no spoilers here.
And so to God: for the Almighty you need an almighty voice and who better to supply the requisite musical thunder than The Voice himself: take a bow, Russell Watson. Known for his extensive opera work Watson also has much experience in musical theatre – including the arena show of Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds: it has been said that he “sings like Pavarotti and entertains the audience like Sinatra”. Watson doesn’t appear on stage but sings from the gods, so to speak, and far from damning with faint praise we can be assured that Watson’s celestial vocal chords will be condemning with omnipotent resonance.
With the ever growing popularity of arena shows like the aforementioned War of the Worlds it’s certain that Heaven On Earth is going to be a seismic, emotion-stirring, not-to-be-missed event: and we’ll all be waiting with rapt anticipation to discover exactly what the Deus Ex Machina will be.
