Tiddler and the other terrific tales is an hour long play that tells a few of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s tales. The tales covered are Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant in Town and A Squash and a Squeeze.
As you would expect, the auditorium is full of lots of little kiddies. They all sit quietly in their seats, focussing on the production and my little five-year-old theatre companion is no exception, he sits straight up with a small smile on his face.
The set was simple and so were the props. There were loads of props. There were animal-shaped cushions, rope that was transformed into a steering wheel, a scarf that suddenly became a slithery snake, a green handbag that was used to be a hat and even a frog at one point, and there was puppeteering too. The mixture of props was interesting, simple but sophisticated enough to support the tales.
Shadows were used to project Tiddler getting lost at sea and faced with a shark. I must say if I was going to criticise this production, it would be its use of shadowing. The shadows that were projected on the screen were not very clear, a bit disappointing for a mainstream production. However my little man did not seem to mind this in the least, he was too engrossed in the shark following Tiddler.
He knows Tiddler and recognises the other tales instantly too. He was giggling to himself, in anticipation of the smartest giant’s trousers falling down. And they sure did fall down to reveal his polka dot silky shorts.
I really enjoyed the live music and the ‘toe-tapping tunes’. There were lots of catchy tunes. A very good way to introduce children to different types of music. So, all in all, a very good production, with some creative and interesting use of props and a range of great music.
