From 16th to – 22nd October 2017, some of the world’s top improvisers will descend on the city for the annual Slapdash International Improv Festival – the longest-running festival of improvised theatre and comedy in the UK! Slapdash is a week-long celebration, hosting seven days of workshops, three nights of shows, and an array of improvisers from across the Globe!
Improv has long been the training ground for actors and comedians such as Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Bill Murray, Amy Poehler, Dan Aykroyd and Jordan Peele in the US and is growing at an exciting rate in London, throughout the UK, and across the world!
Organised by The Nursery, which has been bringing improvisation to Londoners for almost a decade, this year’s festival headliners include Armando Diaz, who is regarded as one of the best improv teachers in America and has written sketches for Comedy Central and performed on Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Hawaiian group On The Spot Improv, making their international debut with their improvised silent movie Hush, and the first ever Slapdash International Cast, a team of improvisers from six different countries, trained by the best and thrown together for ONE PERFORMANCE ONLY!
In addition the festival has guest improvisers teaching classes from Instinctive Storytelling and Stage Dynamics to Anime Improv, Improvised Penny Dreadfuls and Hitchcocked: From Stage To Screen.
Shows take place at The Nursery Theatre, Broadgate and workshops are spread between The Nursery’s Broadgate venue and its Training Centre at London Bridge. For further information and the full line-up of shows and workshops visit: http://slapdashfestival.com
Armando Diaz invented the improv format aptly named The Armando, now performed all over the world, and is widely regarded as one of the best improv teachers in America. He has written sketches for Comedy Central and performed on Late Night With Conan O’Brien. He will be both performing at the festival and teaching workshops.
On The Spot Improv from Hawaii are making their international debut with their first ever London Performance of Hush – an improvised silent movie! They will also be teaching the secrets of their celebrated style in a Slapdash workshop. “…slayed the audience with its silent-movie style improvisations…plying the physical comedy so well you’d think slapstick was a synonym for “sublime.” – Austin Chronical
“I am honored to be a part of one of the few groups selected to perform at Slapdash. I am excited to be sharing Hush, a format that I love dearly, with a new audience and hope to inspire people with it. I also look forward to being inspired by the acts I see there!” Alissa Joy Lee.
The Slapdash International Cast is a team of nine improvisers from the US, UK, Canada, Italy, Germany and Peru, who will rehearse together for five days and headline the festival’s Friday night show. The group will train under teacher Jon Bolden from The Hideout Theatre, Texas, and perform a one-act improvised play on the Friday night.
The Nursery Theatre, Broadgate is a new venue in the heart of the city, just minutes from Liverpool Street and Moorgate stations. In addition to Slapdash, The Nursery Theatre runs regular shows from Thursday to Sunday, with this season’s highlights including the likes of The Owls Are Not What They Seem: Improvised Twin Peaks, The Maydays’ Tim Burton-inspired musical Happily Never After, Impromptu Shakespeare and The Unplanned Cabaret.
