Summer may be upon us, but so far, it’s been a bit of a wash-out; with the sun seemingly suffering from a touch of stage fright in the wings, endless rain and cloud has taken centre stage and put a dampener on summer plans. Our English weather doesn’t have to dash all enjoyment for July however: if you’re a theatre fan then there are plenty of events out there which can help to brighten up your day. One of these is the upcoming cabaret from Kieran Brown on 29th July.
Former Les Miserables and Love Never Dies star Kieran Brown can be found at the Apollo Victoria Theatre most nights on stage with the company of Wicked. On Sunday 29th July though, Brown will be at the Union Theatre in south east London where he will be hosting his second solo cabaret, My Big Fat MUSICAL Cabaret…2! Billed as “an evening of unadulterated musical theatre bliss”, Brown promises a night full of fun and surprises, performing a veritable cornucopia of great songs with the help of a few special guest vocalists. Names joining him for big, fat cabaret fun include Jacqueline Hughes (Wicked), Ria Jones (Witches of Eastwick, Les Mis, Sunset Boulevard),Sophia Ragavelas (Les Mis, Mamma Mia, The Lion King) and Oliver Watton (Wicked).
For the cabaret audience, there will be something for everyone, with songs both old and new featuring on the night. Tuck into an old favourite with songs from classic shows such as Ghost, Jersey Boys, Metropolis, My Fair Lady, Taboo and Witches of Eastwick; gorge yourself in the timeless music of composers like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim, and take a taste of the original compositions from up-and-coming new musical theatre writers such as Anderson and Petty, Pippa Cleary and Jake Brunger, Craig Christie, Christopher Hamilton and Chris Passey, who is also the musical director for the cabaret. Brown will be performing some brand new and as-yet unheard of works from these emerging names in musical theatre, including two new songs from the trans-atlantic duo Anderson and Petty; ‘Tell Me’ and ‘A New Star Tonight’. He has also teased a tribute to the Queen of Pop, along with a “cheeky nod to a certain Oz set musical and a song about Facebook!”
My Big Fat Musical Cabaret…2! is so named as it is the follow-up to Brown’s debut solo cabaret My Big Fat Musical Cabaret, which he hosted at the Pheasantry in October 2011. Brown gave his cabaret audience a night to remember with an eclectic mix of material performed by some very special people, having invited David Kristopher-Brown, Adam Lake, Sophia Ragavelas and Adam Lake to sing with him. I described him then as “a rather talented young man with a big voice” – his closing rendition of ‘Til I Hear You Sing’ was a sight to behold – and he truly is.
It isn’t often that life hands out second chances, but for those who missed out on Brown’s cabaret the first time around, My Big Fat Musical Cabaret…2! offers just that. After the success of his first cabaret, this promises to be an exciting night of great music, great voices, and of course, immense enjoyment; a musical theatre-themed pub quiz, musical bingo and the opportunity for audience participation are all part of the fun! Summer may be MIA, but if you head down to the Union Theatre on Sunday 29th July then you’ll find that Kieran Brown and his ‘Big Fat Musical Cabaret’ just may bring a little extra sunshine to your life.
