The Michael Edwards Studio Theatre, an 85-seat performance space will open inside the Cutty Sark in Greenwich January 2014. It is situated in the lower hold of the museum clipper ship, and will start with a two-week programme of shows, including performances from comedians Ross Noble and Alan Davies.
The performing arts space will host a blend of comedy, cabaret, music and small-scale drama productions alongside showcases and non-professional work from local groups.
Three seasons of work a year will be programmed. There are also plans to create a second 220-seat performance and events space in the gallery beneath the raised ship, which is at the moment used as an exhibition area, together with using the whole site for promenade theatre.
Richard Doughty, director of the museum, said: “We want to establish Cutty Sark as an arts venue over and above it being a museum ship or a visitor attraction.”
He added: “We want to ensure that Cutty Sark is accessible to the widest possible audiences. We believe this varied programming will allow us to reach out to people who wouldn’t otherwise come to the ship and experience it.”
The Michael Edwards Studio Theatre’s opening season runs from 29th January to 15th February 2014.
All performances start at 7.45pm.
