Nina Kristofferson UK tour of her Billie Holiday Story that she originally debuted at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe, before a season at London’s Charing Cross Theatre in 2013.
She will begin the tour at Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre 1st April, before visiting Bromley, New Wimbledon Theatre, Grimsby, York, Woking and Birmingham.
The show takes you through the highs and lows of Billie Holiday’s career punctuating each story with some of her greatest hits like God Bless The Child, Good Morning Heartache, Strange Fruit, Don’t Explain, All of me and many more. Billie’s unusual timbre tells a story like no other jazz singer. Her phrasing and timing is heartfelt as she takes you on a journey which encapsulates her many influences including prostitution, the cops, doing time and the affects drugs had on her life. Her relationship with men, her work, the abuse she suffered by those who took advantage of her. What drove her and finally killed her.
Nina Kristofferson is joined by a band of jazz musicians led by MD/pianist Allan Rogers and featuring Martin Shaw on trumpet, Albert Gaza on tenor sax and clarinet and Phil Donnelly on double bass.
God Bless The Child
Kristofferson recently commented, “I first heard Billie Holiday on the radio when I was very young and immediately fell in love with the song ‘God Bless the Child’. I remember singing along with her using my hairbrush for a mic! Then came my first opportunity at drama school to sing some jazz so I chose ‘Strange Fruit.’ I wanted to know all there was to know about Billie Holiday and the more I learned the more I loved her.”
“I studied her voice, tone, emotions, breathing, mannerisms, relationships and her look. The research helped me to understand her, feel her, and act the part more truthfully. I love Billie Holiday because despite the heartache and the pain she went through, she still had a passionate love for life. She touched my soul deeply through the good times and the bad. Billie was a survivor, a strong woman, beautiful, graceful, emotional, delicate and vulnerable with a great sense of humor.”
