Eve Best is to return to Shakespeare’s Globe in London this summer to play Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra.
The production will commence performances on 17th May, before its official opening on 29th May, for a run in rep through to 24th August 2014.
The production is to be directed by Jonathan Munby. Phil Daniels is to play Enorbarbus. Further casting is to be announced.
Best was last seen on the Globe stage as Beatrice in the 2011 production of Much Ado About Nothing and last year directed Macbeth at the venue. Her performance in the title role of Hedda Gabler at the Almeida won her the 2005 Olivier Award for Best Actress. In 2012 she played the title role in The Duchess of Malfi at London’s Old Vic.
Phil Daniels was previously at the Globe in The God of Soho in 2011, and is soon to appear as The Citizen in The Knight of the Burning Pestle at the new indoor Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from 20th February.
Antony and Cleopatra will be one of four Shakespeare productions in this year’s Globe summer season, together with Titus Andronicus, Julius Caesar and The Comedy of Errors, a quartet of plays themed around war and the classical world.
