Touring dates have been announced for a new UK tour of the recent Cameron Mackintosh/Chichester Festival Theatre production of Cy Coleman, Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble’s 1980 Broadway musical Barnum, presented in a revised version by Mackintosh and Bramble.
Co-produced by Mackintosh and Michael Harrison, it will commence performances at Leicester’s Curve Theatre 5th September through to 13th September 2014, before heading off to Bristol, Southend, High Wycombe, London’s New Wimbledon Theatre, Hull, Edinburgh, Manchester, Aberdeen, Bradford, Woking, Wolverhampton and Nottingham.
The previously announced Brian Conley, who will star in the title role of PT Barnum, will be joined by Linzi Hateley as his wife Chairy.
The production, which was directed at Chichester by Timothy Sheader, opened at Chichester’s state-of-the-art Theatre in the Park in July 2013, and played to almost 70,000 people.
The musical follows the irrepressible imagination and dreams of Phineas T. Barnum, America’s Greatest Showman. The story of his life and his marriage to Chairy reveals a couple who looked at the world from opposite sides of the spectrum, and also reveals that she was the practical one who made Barnum’s dreams come true. According to press materials, the production follows the legendary showman’s life as he lit up the world with the color, warmth and excitement of his imagination and finally teamed up with J. A. Bailey to create Barnum and Bailey’s Circus – the Greatest Show on Earth.
