Earlier this week it was announced that We Will Rock You is to close at the Dominion Theatre, London, at the end of May 2014, with the final show on 31st May 2014, shortly after its 12th anniversary.
Maybe somewhat premature, as the dust hasn’t yet settled on We Will Rock You closing, but the world of theatre is a seemingly ever revolving door, and much speculation has risen as to which show will go into the Dominion Theatre, once it is vacated.
The statement from the General Manager of the Dominion Theatre, David Pearson, that “We wish the show (We Will Rock You) every success for the future, as we now prepare to accelerate our restoration and refurbishment programme ready to welcome an exciting new production in 2015,” indicates that it will be 2015 before a new show opens.
The rumours are numerous but one of them is that Motown The Musical, currently playing on Broadway, could head for the Dominion Theatre. However, the Broadway producers of Motown have released the following statement: “The Broadway producers of Motown the Musical are thrilled that there is so much interest in the show going to London’s West End. There is an exploration of setting up a London company, but it is too early to confirm a theatre or when the show will open. Currently, the Motown team is focused on the US national tour which starts performances at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago on April 22nd”
One thing is for sure, that whichever show comes to the Dominion Theatre will have some very big shoes to fill, as the theatre has one of the largest capacities in London, at over 2,000.
Will it be Kinky Boots, Back To The Future, Newsies... what do you think?
