Award-winning stage and screen actress Sheridan Smith has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Hull in recognition of her outstanding career to date.
Dr Smith congratulated the assembled graduates on achieving their degrees before urging them to soak up the opportunities life throws at them and ‘get out there and grab life with both hands’.
Dr Smith, who is originally from nearby Epworth in North Lincolnshire, acted at Hull New Theatre as a child and enjoyed a long association with the Northern Theatre Company before she left the north to pursue her acting career in London. She received her award in the first of the University’s summer degree ceremonies in a packed Hull City Hall alongside graduates from the Faculties of Art and Social Sciences, and Science and Engineering.
She said afterwards: “I’m thrilled to be an honorary graduate of the University of Hull. I’m very excited to stand amongst those who I believe will make a difference in the future. It’s truly an honour and I’m very grateful to have been recognised in this way.”
Dr Smith is one of nine outstanding individuals being honoured alongside more than 3,500 students this week. Article source
