Midnight Bell Productions present The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton, Written and performed by Mark Farrelly. Directed by Linda Marlowe at the Old Red Lion Theatre, London: 25th September to 11th October 2014.
The extraordinary true story of playwright and novelist Patrick Hamilton transfers to London directly from its world premiere run at the Edinburgh Festival.
The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton tells, for the first time in any medium, the extraordinary, turbulent true story of novelist and playwright Patrick Hamilton (1904-1962), author of classic plays Rope, Gaslight and novel Hangover Square. The audience meets Patrick in the late 1950s at an electro-shock therapy clinic. In the hour before his final treatment, Patrick surveys his tattered life, which includes huge and sudden early literary fame, a disastrous relationship with a Soho prostitute, and an even more ruinous marriage. As Patrick descends into alcoholism, his writing career blasted to drunken smithereens, he bids to slay his tenacious inner demons in the audience’s presence, and unlock the secret of why humans “can get from one end of life to the other without ever feeling they truly knew another human being“.
An arresting blend of original writing and Patrick’s own words, the show introduces a new generation to Hamilton’s fantastically bleak and witty writing. This production showcases extracts from some of Hamilton’s finest works, by special permission from the Estate of Patrick Hamilton.
Mark Farrelly’s West End credits include Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (with Matthew Kelly), and he also appeared in a wide range of other plays across the UK and internationally. He is directed by the renowned Linda Marlowe, who has won awards for her own solo performances such as Berkoff’s Women and The World’s Wife. Mark has written and is performing in the new solo show Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope which is also directed by Linda Marlowe and playing at the St. James Theatre in London from 28th August – 7th September 2014, followed by a National tour.
