Sadler’s Wells celebrates Nordic dance culture with Northern Light, a season of dance created by established and emerging contemporary artists from Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Denmark and Norway, from 18th September to 14th November 2014.
The first Northern Light production to be performed in the main house is Royal Swedish Ballet with the UK premiere of Mats Ek’s Juliet and Romeo from 24th to 27th September.
The world’s fourth oldest ballet company, Royal Swedish Ballet performs in London for the first time since 1995. Celebrating its 240th anniversary, Johannes Öhman, the director of the Royal Swedish Ballet commissioned renowned choreographer Mats Ek to create a full length adaptation of a timeless love story for 32 of the company’s dancers. Having created many new interpretations of classics, Ek’s Juliet and Romeo attracted much acclaim both in Sweden and internationally. Making its UK premiere this autumn, Mats Ek brings a quirky twist to this much-loved ballet.
Juliet and Romeo is set to a score by Tchaikovsky, instead of the more traditional Prokofiev, adapted and arranged by Anders Högstedt. This new production features scenography and costume design by Magdalena Åberg. The Renaissance-b-inspired costumes are given a modern twist, while the dark, urban setting helps bring this classic love story into the 21st century. Pairing a contemporary aesthetic with dynamic choreography and Linus Fellbom’s atmospheric lighting design, Mats Ek places this romantic tale in a brutal environment strewn with conflict between characters and generations.
Mats Ek began his career as a director at Stockholm’s Marionette Theatre and Royal Dramatic Theatre. In 1973, he joined the Cullberg Ballet as a dancer before turning to choreography in 1976.
He has been a guest choreographer for leading companies of the world, including the Royal Swedish Opera, the Norwegian Opera, Stuttgart Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Metropolitan Opera, and Paris Opera Ballet. Notable works include Sleeping Beauty (1996) for Hamburg Ballet, A Sort Of (1997) for Nederlands Dans Theater. In 2005, he created Aluminium for Compañía Nacional de Danza de Madrid.
Mats Ek will also be performing Memory, a heartfelt piece, performed by himself alongside internationally renowned dancer, Ana Laguna, his wife and muse. Memory will be performed on 12th and 13th September as part of Sadler’s Wells Elixir Festival. The festival celebrates lifelong creativity and the contribution of older artists.
