As the Christmas season begins, what better way to start it off than to watch the new musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, A Christmas Carol, at the Chickenshed.
This is a great production, one that my little boy and I really enjoyed.
As you’d expect the ghost from the past makes her appearance pretty early on. She was dressed in a beautiful white glitzy dress with lovely Christmassy sparkly make-up. She places her hand on Scrooge’s heart, and the takes him through a journey of his past.
The ghost from present was a cool dude in his stand-out statement white suit and dark round sunglasses and his great funky dance moves. He entices into bobbing along to the catchy tunes. Then at the end, we have the ghost from the future, in his dark black costume and pointy bony fingers. We never do get to see his face. Quite Harry Potter gory style. The costumes were awesome and the make-up added that little bit of a touch to bring the whole thing to life.
We were blown away with the stage set. It is designed exceptionally well, there are abstract illusions, clever lighting, unexpected doors and windows, and a few more surprises that add to the magic of the season.
At the Chickenshed, I expect signers and it was certainly was an absolute delight to watch them in this show. There was a team of signers that shared the stage, and they all had their own individual style. There was a bubbly flexible signer, a serious signer, and even another who was totally absorbed in the signing.
There was lots of music and different sorts too. The choreography was fun and it was absolutely beautiful to watch all the different children of different ages, disabilities and skill level participate in the show. I adore listening to live singing and am really impressed at the voices that came out of these little children too. It must have been exceptionally hard work to coordinate such a large cast.
As we leave the auditorium my little boy says… Mama can we watch it again? So I know he has definitely given it his stamp of approval. Well done Chickenshed for producing such a fun Christmassy production!

“You there!” he shouted to a boy on the street. “What day is this?” The boy gave Scrooge a puzzled look. “It’s Christmas, sir. Christmas morning!”
