Ballet national de Marseille: Roommates – Southbank Centre

Roommates, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank, is an energising and sometimes sublime collection of six pieces performed by Ballet national de Marseille. Not to be missed by those who enjoy exciting contemporary dance.

The six works have been chosen by directing artists (LA) HORDE to describe the celebrity-admired dance collective’s influences. The pieces vary in tone, including the sublime (Oiwa), exquisitely poignant (Les Indomptes) while also taking a striking look at sexuality as consumption (Weather is Sweet).

While some of the pieces perhaps connect more than others they all engage dynamically at a dance level. The accompanying music is fabulous and an important layer bringing tones and enjoyment to this show.

The stand-out dance work here is Oiwa by Peeping Tom, the exciting Belgian Dance Company. In this dancers magnificently bring classical statues representing lovers to life within a concealing and revealing cloudscape. It would be worth going to Roommates to see Oiwa alone. While watching you know you’re witnessing special dance moments, that you won’t want to end.

The affecting pas de deux of Indomptes also deserves special mention. Wonderful music by Wim Mertens.

Roommates played to a packed house on its first night at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with the dancers receiving an extended and well-deserved standing ovation.

This is a show not to miss.
