Sponge by the East Midlands dance company Turned on its Head is currently playing at the Battersea Arts Centre. It’s an imaginative and playful dance show perfectly devised for young children. Led by two dancers Shane Shambu and Louise Gibbons, Sponge is a highly visual show with no dialogue and an upbeat 1970s dance soundtrack. The show’s creators recommend Sponge for babies and young children from 4 months to 4 years old. The show is 50 minutes of interpretative dance about sponges. Yes, … [Read more...]

Review of Tiddler & Other Terrific Tales
Tiddler and the other terrific tales is an hour long play that tells a few of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s tales. The tales covered are Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant in Town and A Squash and a Squeeze. As you would expect, the auditorium is full of lots of little kiddies. They all sit quietly in their seats, focussing on the production and my little five-year-old theatre companion is no exception, he sits straight up with a small smile on his face. The set was simple … [Read more...]
Review of The Gruffalo at the Lyric Theatre
“A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood,” the narrator says aloud. Yes, it is the story of The Gruffalo. There are bugs, bees, and a mouse. The scene is set and with that, you hear a sigh of satisfaction from the young audience. The stage set is more than adequate, there are leaves, trees, logs and of course… it resembles the deep dark woods as you would imagine when you once read the book. The costumes are interesting, practical and nothing less than adorable, yet they do have a … [Read more...]
Review of Mr Popper’s Penguins at the Criterion Theatre
Welcome to Stillwater. The town where everyone will fit in, including Mr Popper, a painter and decorator, who wants to go on adventures and dreams of going to see all of the favourite places in the books he reads. He imagines getting closer to the summit, with each step he climbs up the ladder while he holds a paint brush in his hand, he imagines traversing snowy landscapes while white sheets are being shaken in the background. His conversations over the radio with the famous explorer, … [Read more...]
Jasmin Vardimon Company’s Pinocchio – Review
There’s something about theatre aimed at children that always surprises me. I think part of it is seeing the hordes of sprogs rushing into the foyer, parents or other unfortunate relatives trying to keep up, then the noise that a few hundred children can generate while waiting for the show to start is quite phenomenal. However, if the production is a good one, then as soon as the curtain goes up, the noise level goes down and the attention to the stage becomes 100%, proving once more the magical … [Read more...]
5-star The Gruffalo at the Lyric Theatre London
There are somethings that we know to be true and one of them is that “There is no such thing as the Gruffalo!” or is there? Well kids, this is the time to be nice to your parents and drop subtle hints that they should be taking you to the Lyric Theatre where the deep dark wood has set up for the summer. If you don’t know the story then firstly where have you been since 1999 and secondly here’s a quick synopsis. One day a mouse (Ellie Bell) goes for a walk through the woods looking for a … [Read more...]
Review of The Gruffalo at Vaudeville Theatre – ‘Magic’
A dedicated reviewer does whatever is asked of him or her to ensure that our readers are fully up to date on the shows to see, so Saturday morning, instead of have a well-deserved lie-in, my companion and I braved the Christmas shoppers to head into the West-End at 10:30 in the morning for a showing of The Gruffalo at The Vaudeville Theatre - and I have to say, it was well worth it. I’m going to be honest and say I was approaching this theatre trip with some trepidation. I, like almost … [Read more...]
