Dear Evan Hansen at Sunderland Empire | Audience Feedback

I saw Dear Evan Hansen last night. I can honestly say it was one of the most powerful and emotionally charged shows I’ve ever experienced. I’d heard a lot about this award-winning musical, but nothing quite prepares you for how moving it is when you see it live. It’s the kind of production that stays with you, sparking conversations and reflections long after you’ve left the theatre.

The story follows Evan Hansen, a teenager struggling with social anxiety, who accidentally finds himself caught in a web of lies after the death of a classmate, Connor Murphy. The initial awkward misunderstanding quickly snowballs, leading to Evan gaining the connection and attention he’s always craved, but at a cost he isn’t prepared for. It’s a deeply human story, exploring themes of belonging, grief, and how far people are willing to go to feel seen.

The actor playing Evan was remarkable. He perfectly captured the awkwardness and vulnerability of a boy struggling with his own identity, while also showing the emotional weight of the situation he finds himself in. His performance was so authentic that you couldn’t help but empathise with him, even when his decisions became more complicated. Songs like Waving Through a Window and Words Fail were delivered with such intensity that you could feel the entire audience holding their breath. The supporting cast were just as impressive.

The Murphy family, each grappling with their own guilt and grief over Connor’s death, brought a raw and emotional depth to the story. The parents, particularly, delivered some of the most gut-wrenching moments as they clung to the idea of Evan as a link to their son. The relationship between Evan and Zoe Murphy (Connor’s sister) was beautifully done—it felt awkward and tender, but also so honest, capturing the complexity of two people finding solace in each other under difficult circumstances.

The music is what makes Dear Evan Hansen so special. It’s not just there to entertain; every song feels like a window into the characters’ minds and emotions. Tracks like ‘You Will Be Found’ and ‘For Forever’ struck a real chord with me. The lyrics are so relatable and poignant, and it was clear many in the audience felt the same. There were moments when I could hear people quietly crying, and I’ll admit, I was wiping away a tear or two myself.

Visually, the production was stunning. The use of digital screens and projections was incredibly effective, reflecting the influence of social media and modern communication. It added a contemporary edge, making the production feel fresh and relevant, especially for younger audiences. The staging itself was minimal, but that simplicity worked perfectly, ensuring the focus stayed on the characters and their emotional journeys.

The Sunderland Empire provided the perfect setting for the show. It’s a beautiful venue, and the staff were welcoming and efficient, making the whole experience seamless. The audience last night was fully engaged from the very beginning, and you could sense the emotional impact the story was having on everyone in the room.

What really struck me about Dear Evan Hansen was how well it balanced the heavier themes with moments of humour and hope. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, but it never feels too heavy or overwhelming. Instead, it’s a touching reminder of the importance of connection, honesty, and kindness – both to others and to ourselves.

If you’re thinking about seeing Dear Evan Hansen, I couldn’t recommend it more. It’s running at Sunderland Empire until Saturday 23rd November, and it’s not the kind of show you want to miss. Whether you’ve been to the theatre a hundred times or it’s your first visit, this production is an unforgettable experience. It’s heartfelt, thought-provoking, and beautifully performed – a story that will leave you reflecting on your own relationships and what it truly means to be seen.

  1. It’s a great show and this touring production is excellent. Slightly different from the West End production of a couple of years back but no less impactful. Superb songs and great performances. This is what musical theatre should be.
