Exhilarating and fun-filled Cirque Eloize’s iD at the Peacock Theatre

Cirque Éloize iD at peacock TheatreCirque Éloize’s iD at The Peacock Theatre, provides a fun-filled, exhilarating evening engaging audiences of all ages. Cirque Éloize was awarded the 26th Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal for iD in 2010 when Author and Director, Jeannot Painchaud, began Cirque Eloize’s eighth original creation. From the opening of the show, the lighting, sound, and videography, transport you to an immersive urban city. With a loose narrative of rivalry gangs competing within an urban city, the use of storytelling creates another layer of excitement to the performance as the audience watches the story unveil.

A huge part of the success within iD is down to the Lighting Designer, Nicolas Descoteaux, whose work creates great suspense within the performance. The lighting design brilliantly complements the performers energetic dance routines as well as the flawless circus tricks. The lighting very cleverly transforms a simplistic theatre setting into many different ‘city’ scenarios. The mind-blowing skills and tricks performed by the very talented cast keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the show. iD fuses circus art with professional street dance to discover a whole new level of performance, suggesting a modern and unique take on West Side Story.

Although the circus art is performed effortlessly throughout the show, moments of the hip-hop choreography seems under-rehearsed and uninteresting. It seems that the circus skills outshine the dancers’ technique and in group routines there were moments of timing problems that are obvious to the audience. However, I cannot fault the performers energy and audience engagement, providing moments of viewer interaction on stage which created an exciting, nervous atmosphere in the auditorium as we watched an audience member take part in the ‘life threatening’ circus act.

Contortionist and aerial silks performer, Nicole Winter from the USA stole the show with an energetic performance and exceptional flexibility. Performing in the circus since the age of 14, Winters high level of contortion acts are breath-taking to watch as she performs them with true elegance and control. The high energy show not only provides comedic and shocking moments but also provides the audience with heart-warming and touching scenes. Watching a duet between a B-Boy and a contortionist, is something so unique and relevant to the new age of performance and theatre. Expect to hold your breath as you watch the cast balance on a tower of chairs, jump from great heights and juggle from impossible positions. iD is a mind-blowing performance and highly recommended for all ages.
