James Phelan’s Showman is the kind of magnetic, high-energy, theatrical experience that reminds you why live performance still has the power to astonish. It is bold, cheeky, stylish, and delivered with the kind of confidence that makes you lean forward in your seat, certain that something extraordinary is about to happen – Phelan delivers on that again and again.

At its core, Showman is a seventy-five-minute celebration of illusion, storytelling and the irresistible charisma of a performer who knows exactly how to work a room! Phelan strides onto the stage with the swagger of someone who has absolutely mastered his craft, yet he balances that bravado with a warmth and humour that makes the audience feel like co-conspirators rather than spectators. It is a tricky line to walk, but he does it with ease.
The show blends magic, mind-reading and theatrical flair into a single, tightly choreographed experience. What makes it so compelling is that Phelan never relies solely on spectacle. Yes, the illusions are slick, surprising and often jaw-dropping, but they are wrapped in narrative. He does not just perform a trick – he tells a story, builds an illusion and invites the audience both as a whole and as individuals (beware: do not sit in the front row if you do not wish to take part!) into the emotional stakes of each moment. It is this storytelling instinct that elevates Showman beyond a typical magic show.
The pacing is electric yet relaxed. One moment you are laughing at Phelan’s razor-sharp wit, the next you are holding your breath as he attempts something that feels genuinely dangerous or impossible. He has a gift for creating suspense, then breaking it with a perfectly timed punchline. The rhythm of the show feels almost musical – beats of tension, release, surprise and delight, all woven together with precision.
Underbelly Boulevard is an ideal venue for this kind of performance. Its intimate scale means that you are close enough to see every expression, every gesture, every flicker of mischief in Phelan’s face. When a performer is only a few feet away, the illusions feel even more impossible.
One of the standout qualities of Showman is Phelan’s connection with his audience. He is a natural improviser, never appearing to stick rigidly to a script but allowing the show to breathe and evolve. Audience participation is handled with charm and respect: even the most reluctant ‘volunteers’ end up laughing and enjoying themselves.
Showman is exactly what it promises: a showcase of a performer at the top of his game. Whether you are a lifelong fan of magic and illusion or someone who usually avoids it, Phelan has a way of winning you over! It is clever, funny, surprising and bursting with personality! Highly recommended – but perhaps not for young children!
