Nobody’s Talking About Jamie – Edinburgh Fringe

Jamie once had a girlfriend, Cordelia, but that was a while ago, so the show isn’t primarily about that, but a five-year friendship that goes from strength to strength before coming to an abrupt end after his friend Lily gets herself a boyfriend, and virtually all of the events and activities Jamie and Lily had lined up are now things Lily wants to do with her beau instead. Ouch. He grew his hair long when he was younger, wanting to look like Kurt Cobain, but he says the end result was that he looked like his mother.

As for Cordelia, Jamie met her unintentionally as they were attending the same performance of a West End play shortly before the 2020 lockdowns, but if that wasn’t bad enough, her new partner was also there, and while we have no idea whether Jamie was able to enjoy the play, he did write an entire song about Darren (if I recall his name correctly), with the sort of sarcasm that one might reasonably expect in the circumstances.

Jamie plays keyboards in some songs, guitar in some others, and the exercise bike was used regularly, mostly if not entirely on account of spinning classes, led by the aforementioned Lily. Incense continues to burn throughout the play – perhaps Jamie has the same (low) opinion I do of the usual smells in the venue (though to be fair, they’ve done a pretty good job this year of neutralising the strong odours), or, more likely, it’s indicative of the rather hippy ‘factory’ Jamie and Lily shared.

With a very likeable stage presence, the lyrical content in the songs are as hilarious as the spoken word narrative. While relationship breakups are a well-trodden path, losing a friend – a ‘bestie’, which is not a word Jamie uses, but it fits – is not a story often told. An energetic performance in more ways than one, the cycling in the spinning classes might be speedy, but the pace of the show itself is just right. It’s easy to root for Jamie in this charming and compelling production. If nobody’s talking about Jamie, it’s because we can’t be laughing heartily and talk at the same time.

Review by Chris Omaweng

It’s a boy meets girl story, with a melodic twist. Regional Finalist for the BBC New Comedy Awards and Finalist for Musical Comedy Awards, Jamie Finn blends storytelling, comedy and original music to explore this story of dizzying romance and the tragedy of friendship.

After socially awkward Jamie is dumped for a man that goes to the gym, spin instructor and rock-n roll powerhouse, Lily takes him in. He spends the next five years learning how to move forward, on a bike that doesn’t move. Sometimes it feels like everything has changed, even when you’re still exactly where you started. What do you do when your friend breaks up with you?
