Review of Freedom the play at the Arcola Theatre

February 1, 2012 Last updated: May 7, 2018 2:14 pm By Neil Cheesman

Freedom

“Freedom is a tense and powerful drama, punctuated by dark humour and tragic romance” The story is set between Tajikistan and England, and follows three characters forced to choose between their own freedom and that of each other.  The innovative stage scenery is split between the two countries and it works very well. Without giving too much away from the plot, the play is as follows: Benham, is a Tajik opium farmer who is desperately trying to do the best he can for his family in a country … [Read more...]

Review of The Ladykillers Gielgud Theatre

The Ladykillers

The Ladykillers at Gielgud Theatre Mrs. Wilberforce – Marcia Warren, Professor Marcus – Peter Capaldi,  Major Courtney – James Fleet,    Louis Harvey – Ben Miller, Harry Robinson – Stephen Wight, One Round – Clive Rowe An adaptation of the popular 1955 Ealing Comedy film of the same name, The Ladykillers is as sinister as the title implies. A seemingly docile, innocent elderly lady, Mrs Wilberforce, rents out her spare room to an amateur string quintet for rehearsals, unwittingly letting … [Read more...]

Matilda The Musical Review November 2011

November 5, 2011 Last updated: April 26, 2020 7:55 pm By MissJulie

When the RSC-staged musical adaption of Roald Dahl’s Matilda played in Stratford earlier this year, it was widely acclaimed by both audience and critic alike. News of its West End transfer to the Cambridge Theatre was enthusiastically received and the London audience eagerly anticipated its arrival. Well, now it’s here and it more than lives up to the hype. Roald Dahl’s book about the ill-treated child prodigy who discovers she has ‘super-powers’ and can move objects with her eyes is one that … [Read more...]

Crazy For You Review Novello Theatre

October 12, 2011 Last updated: May 6, 2019 2:51 pm By Neil Cheesman

Crazy For You

After a successful run at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Crazy For You has made its West End transfer to the Novello Theatre, and quite frankly, who could ask for anything more? God bless such a musical that ensures every single patron sways their way out of the Novello, exiting as a youngster once again no matter what their age; simple, traditional magic at its best! Sure, it is evidently a musical plucked straight out of its time, the pre-Sondheim separation between song and dance is more … [Read more...]

The Tempest at the Theatre Royal Haymarket Review

September 26, 2011 Last updated: September 16, 2015 2:31 pm By Neil Cheesman

The Tempest

Last week, we went to see Shakespeare’s The Tempest at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. It’s Shakespeare’s shortest (and probably last) play, which unfolds in real time in a production by Trevor Nunn that lasts about three hours. When we got back home, I had a quick look at some online reviews of this production and was surprised at how negative most of them are. I might not be a professional critic but I do have a degree in English literature and have seen quite a few Shakespeare plays … [Read more...]
