What a show! Romantic Revolution at The London Palladium was a very enjoyable and uplifting evening with extraordinary dancing on display by four dancers of the Bolshoi Ballet accompanied by the burgeoning talents of students from the London Russian Ballet School. The format of eighteen pieces was accessible and attractive to the wide audience, whether ballet aficionados or newcomers watching dance for the very first time. Remarkably more than 900 (very well behaved) schoolchildren from … [Read more...]

Review of Le Grand Mort at Trafalgar Studio Two
Le Grand Mort has a rather ‘grand’ set, all things considered. As the audience quickly discovers, there’s a fully functioning kitchen on stage. There are people like me who tend to survive on cheap supermarket meal deals, ready meals, takeaways and the occasional self-prepared sandwich. Some other theatregoers whose kitchens serve a more functional purpose than mine were more keenly observant on the exact method in which Michael (Julian Clary) was preparing dinner for two (or supper, if that is … [Read more...]
Review of Cabaret at New Wimbledon Theatre
I should probably preface this by saying that Cabaret is one of my all-time favourites, although I haven’t seen a production since the 2002 Australian cast staring Tina Arena and Toby Allen! I’ve been disappointed a few times, not including the previous example, but still, you find yourself channelling your inner Liza and thinking “Maybe this time, I’ll be lucky!” and again taking the plunge. So, coming out the other side, what’s the verdict? Bill Kenwright’s production, directed by Rufus … [Read more...]
Review of The Existence Formula at Tristan Bates Theatre
A relatively brief review for a relatively brief play. If there is a definitive existence formula in The Existence Formula, it went over my head, or I simply wasn’t paying enough attention. Each of the three characters, Nicola (Sarah Rickman), Susie (Kirsty Langley) and Graham (Tom Hamilton), has a monologue at some point, directly addressing the audience in what appeared to me to be streams of consciousness, albeit scripted ones, rather than anything highly dramatic. The rambling, if personal, … [Read more...]
Bascule Chamber Concerts – Tower Bridge
The atmospherics begin outside the venue, standing in the shadow of one of the enormous gothic towers of Sir Horace Jones’s bridge, and then there is a short but vertiginous descent to the bascule chamber itself - the venue isn’t – couldn’t be – suitable for those with disabilities. The descent is accompanied by a collage of sounds recorded above and below the bridge – there is a voiceover but the acoustics make it difficult to grasp more than intermittent words. We descend slowly to below the … [Read more...]
Review of Rebel Angel at the Old Operating Theatre, London Bridge
The period costumes in Rebel Angel, which looks at the formative years of the short life of John Keats (Jonny P Taylor), are excellent, and if this reviewer had more knowledge of costume design, he might comment more extensively on the embroidery and the exquisite patterns. While there are some productions that could have benefited from another creative perspective on board, I am pleased to report that as both writer and director, Angus Graham-Campbell has done quite a splendid job in furnishing … [Read more...]
