Both Claire (Katherine Moran) and James (Tom Hartwell) are sleep-deprived, and it’s not on account of a new-born baby, even if the length of their relationship has certain friends and relatives questioning whether they’re going to start a family and/or tie the knot. But the causes aren’t so much the concern in this production as the consequences – and they are far-reaching. Both of them have enjoyed successes in the entertainment industry (she’s a voiceover artist, he’s a stand-up comedian), and … [Read more...]

Fisherman’s Friends – The Musical at Theatre Royal Brighton
Fisherman’s Friends, the musical, has exploded onto the stage at Brighton! Very few, if any, musicals start with an acapella choir of men of a ‘certain age’ belting out a sea shanty that immediately blows the cobwebs off the theatre and audience by its communicative power - and so it continues, as this is a show which contains 32 musical numbers, nearly all Cornish folk songs or sea shanties, leaving little room for dialogue, especially in Act One, as everyone is blown along by the singing and … [Read more...]
The Bodyguard at New Wimbledon Theatre, London – Review
The idea that someone like Frank Farmer (Ayden Callaghan) has to ‘protect’ Rachel Marron (Melody Thornton) to the point where she has to push back in order to go about her business is a curious one, especially in this day and age. The bodyguard in a sharp suit is, in effect, a would-be knight in shining armour, and he carries her away, quite literally, from danger as though she is incapable of running for herself. This absurdity is only underlined by Karen Bruce’s sprightly choreography, which … [Read more...]
The Great British Bake Off Musical – Noël Coward Theatre, London
Take one incredibly popular television programme, add fifteen or so brand-new songs, a witty and bright book, stir in sixteen or so very talented performers, sprinkle in six excellent musicians, and put it all in a big bowl (well a stage set), and whisk briskly. Then place in the oven (well the Noël Coward Theatre) cook for two hours or so on a high heat and what have you got? The Great British Bake Off Musical. Jake Brunger and Pippa Cleary who wrote the delightful and imaginative The … [Read more...]
My Dead at Barons Court Theatre
A play about a woman and people in general’s connection to their dead ancestors sounds quite intriguing. And Carolyn Hartvigsen tackles this highly relatable concept through her autobiographical play, My Dead. She discovers who her various relatives were through uncovered letters, and is shocked by what she finds. Like discovering her great-great-great grandmother from Norway who was possibly of Sami descent. Dealing with truths she has already known; she is particularly disturbed by the fact … [Read more...]
Brilliant Jerks by Joseph Charlton at Southwark Playhouse
Tyler’s (Shubham Saraf) story, broadly speaking, is one that’s been done before: the chief executive of a young, innovative and rapidly growing company who is eventually forced out by his board of directors, the very same people who supported and funded his ventures, because he may have been the right fit to lead a trendy startup but not a large corporation. Some founders of pioneering companies like Tyler’s know when to let go, sell up and use their entrepreneurial skills to develop something … [Read more...]
