On the outside, Molly’s a street-wise, sassy sixteen-year-old college student from Salford who as she frequently tells us “Is shit with words and my tits are too small”. But it’s just a front because on the inside she’s a naïve, vulnerable young girl who longs for the love she’s not getting from the broken home she lives in. Then one day having a quick smoke before going to her class, she meets John when he asks her for a light and she embarks a journey that has disastrous consequences for … [Read more...]

Review of Ash at the VAULT Festival
Addictions are difficult to kill. Ash is a struggle between the addiction and its user, a battle to see who will win in the end. Ash by Bric à Brac is a play that explores the lifelong smoking addiction of George Crozier. Based on a true story, the play is set during a time of change in the tobacco industry. As the effects of smoking begin to harm loved ones around George, his love affair with smoking begins to kill him every time he has “just one more”. The international Lecoq trained … [Read more...]
Review of Villain at the King’s Head Theatre London
On entering there is an open set containing a single chair and a black and white background. There isn’t much else, but nothing else is required – the performance, writing, lighting and sound do an excellent job of moving you to where you need to be without the need for an actual set change. The movement between different scenes is separated by use of good lighting and the clever use of sound with a deep rumble signifying the “scene change”. The play consists of being taken on a journey, … [Read more...]
Crime and Punishment at Brockley Jack Studio Theatre
I’ve read the novel or at least a translation of it, and although there are many advantages to being ruthless in deciding what to emphasise in bringing Crime and Punishment to the stage, I’m not sure this particular 90-minute version does it full justice. Two-and-a-half hours twice over works magnificently for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, for instance, but in losing significant chunks of the narrative from the book on which this particular show is based, this production comes close to … [Read more...]
5-star This Must Be The Place at The Vaults – Review
Listed as one of the top ten plays to see at The Vaults, This Must be the Place is a hot ticket during the festival and it’s easy to see why. This is a very modern tale of very modern detachment, written with humour and vigour by Brad Birch and Kenneth Emson, and directed with a bouncing youthfulness by Justin Audibert and Josh Roche. The cast are full of energy and at first, the play feels more like a live gig, in a good way. This is no slow burn, you’re invited into the story right from the … [Read more...]
