Preview: Matilda The Musical at Bristol Hippodrome

“A work of genius… it is, in short, a ‘Miracle’ indeed.” — LondonTheatre1

The “loudest librarian in the universe” is coming to Hanley! The Bristol Hippodrome prepares for the arrival of the RSC’s multi-award-winning Matilda The Musical this June.

When LondonTheatre1 first reviewed this production, critic Chris Omaweng described it as a “triumph over adversity tale” that manages to be both darkly comic and deeply inspiring. Written by Dennis Kelly with a “razor-sharp” score by Tim Minchin, Matilda remains the gold standard of modern British musicals.

Why Bristol Needs This ‘Miracle’

The Bristol Hippodrome’s expansive stage provides the perfect canvas for what Omaweng calls a “dazzling array of styles and methods.” From the stunningly precise choreography to the famous ‘School Song’—which cleverly works its way through the alphabet—the production is designed to keep even the most “stubborn of children” (and adults) completely attentive. In the grand setting of the Hippodrome, the “power to the people” finale and the high-flying swings promise to be an immersive, “pin-drop” theatrical experience for the West Country.

  • A Different Kind of Hero: Unlike typical child-led stories, Matilda is a “child prodigy” whose maturity and logical thought patterns provide a striking contrast to the “obscene and ridiculous” antics of her aliterate parents and the formidable Miss Trunchbull.
  • Award-Winning Pedigree: This production famously “wiped the floor” at the Olivier Awards, winning Best New Musical, Best Director, and Best Set Design – excellence that is still palpable in every scene change.
  • A Clarion Call for Change: At its heart, the show is fueled by the lyrics of ‘Naughty’: “Just because you find that life’s not fair / It doesn’t mean you just have to grin and bear it.” It is a story that inspires audiences to get active and make a positive change.

Running Time: 2 hours 40 minutes, including interval. Age guidance: 6+. Please note: The production features flashing lights, lasers, smoke effects, and the infamous ‘Chokey’.
