The Seth Concert Series – Orfeh and Andy Karl | Review

Orfeh and Andy KarlThe thing about Seth Rudetsky’s concerts is that they can come across as more than a bit random, especially when a largely musical theatre audience is sat watching a performance of ‘History’, a 2015 song by British/Irish pop band One Direction. Then again, Orfeh and Andy Karl sing such a vast range of songs from across the musical theatre canon and beyond in this concert, in an incredibly stylish way, that the thought crossed my mind that they could sing out entries from a list of mobile telephone contacts (I was going to say ‘phone book’ but we don’t really have those anymore) and make them sound compelling.

Given that there are two stage career stories to tell, it’s remarkable that the concert squeezes in twelve songs and a medley amongst the various anecdotes of backstage happenings, audition processes and, perhaps most importantly, how they met and started a relationship: they were married in January 2001, and their relative longevity as a couple with high profile careers in the entertainment industry is noteworthy, to say the least.

Andy Karl’s fans and followers in Britain and Europe who saw him in Groundhog Day at London’s Old Vic may be a tad disappointed that there weren’t any numbers from that show in this concert, but there were nonetheless some gems to enjoy. Orfeh has such a powerhouse voice that Seth ended up asking for a song to be restarted with Orfeh taking a step away from her microphone.

The couple met during the Broadway run of Saturday Night Fever and were in the same Broadway cast of Legally Blonde, before appearing in the same Broadway production of Pretty Woman – working together is something they relish and would welcome the opportunity to do yet again in future. For one thing, they spend far more time together, finishing work at the same time and so on and so forth. Luckily, the tech gremlins behaved themselves throughout this online concert, ensuring (aside from some negligible sound issues) a smooth experience.

Having recently seen a recorded online concert that featured songs without context or conversation around them, this live song and chat format is, I must say, considerably more satisfying. I wasn’t aware, for instance, that actors in Rocky The Musical traded actual punches (albeit choreographed) on stage, eight times a week, some of which would momentarily leave Andy dazed from the impact. A splendid performance from a delightful duo.

Together, Orfeh and Andy Karl have had an impressively long run as one of Broadway’s best couples. Although they met while doing the Broadway production of Saturday Night Fever, their irrepressible chemistry became the stuff of legend when they co-starred in Legally Blonde, which garnered Orfeh a Tony nomination. Karl earned his own Tony nods for Rocky, On the Twentieth Century, and Groundhog Day (for which he received an Olivier Award). Orfeh and Andy were most recently seen on Broadway in Pretty Woman as Kit De Luca and Edward Lewis.
