Description
The Gondoliers by Gilbert & Sullivan at Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Woking from Wednesday 28th February to Saturday 2nd March 2024.
Knaphill and St John’s Operatic Group return with another Gilbert and Sullivan triumph!
The Gondoliers (or The King of Barataria) was Gilbert and Sullivan’s twelfth comic opera and was first performed at the Savoy Theatre, London, on 7 December 1889. It ran for 554 performances – a very long run in the 19th century.
KASJOG are excited to return to Woking with what will be their sixth production of this title, and their third rendition on the Rhoda McGaw Theatre stage.
With a distinctly Mediterranean feel, the setting is Venice, where the brothers Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, the Gondoliers of the title, are informed by the Grand Inquisitor that one of them has become King of Barataria. But which one? Only their foster mother knows, and she is nowhere to be found. In addition, whichever one is King has been engaged in infancy to Casilda, the daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza-Toro. So far, so awkward – the brothers have just got married…and Casilda loves someone else!
The plot plays out in a festive wave of tuneful song and sparkling dance, including the well-known Cachucha, while taking a gentle pot-shot at class snobbery and the government of the day.
