BLOC Productions presents a refreshing, contemporary and lively interpretation of this award-winning show, inspired by The Taming of the Shrew. Kiss Me, Kate tells the tale of theatre actors Lilli Vanessi and her ex-husband Fred Graham, who are now performing opposite each other as Katherine and Petruchio in a musical version of Shakespeare’s controversial play.
Friction and animosity between Lilli and Fred grow and conflict follows them on and off-stage, threatening the production’s success. The only thing keeping the show together is the threat from an unlikely pair of gangsters, who have come to collect a gambling debt from Bill Calhoun, the show’s Lucentio. In true musical comedy fashion, chaos and slapstick madness ensues before everything is resolved!
This classic Cole Porter musical, with its exquisitely varied score ranging from Latin pastiche to steamy jazz, features popular songs such as Too Darn Hot, Tom Dick or Harry, So In Love, and Brush Up Your Shakespeare.
Kiss Me, Kate is performed by BLOC Productions whose previous productions have included White Christmas, Sister Act, Sunset Boulevard, Fiddler on the Roof and My Fair Lady. The 2019 production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang won both NODA’s regional award for Best Musical and The Rose Bowl’s Bristol Evening Post Award for Best Musical. All our productions feature spectacular staging, a large ensemble and a live professional orchestra.
