Matilda The Musical is the Royal Shakespeare Company’s multi-award-winning stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, and it has called the Cambridge Theatre home since 2011. With music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly, the production won seven Olivier Awards at its London premiere, including Best New Musical.
The show tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a gifted young girl who discovers she has extraordinary powers and uses them to stand up against the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull. Directed by Matthew Warchus with set and costume design by Rob Howell, the London production remains the definitive staging of this story — a permanent fixture in the West End, distinct from the UK & Ireland touring production that visits regional theatres.
Matilda is suitable for ages 6 and up, and continues to be one of the most popular family musicals in London. The show is currently booking through January 2027.

Cambridge Theatre Seating Guide
The Cambridge Theatre has three levels: stalls, dress circle, and upper circle, with a total capacity of around 1,200 seats. The stalls offer the most immersive experience, particularly rows D–L in the centre, where Matilda’s set design — built around oversized Scrabble tiles and children’s building blocks — has the greatest impact.
The dress circle provides an excellent elevated view of the full stage, and is often the best value compromise between price and sightlines. The upper circle is the most affordable option, though restricted-view seats exist at the far sides.

By Tube
The nearest stations are Covent Garden (Piccadilly line, 3-minute walk), Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly lines, 5-minute walk), and Holborn (Central and Piccadilly lines, 7-minute walk). Covent Garden station has lift access but can be extremely busy before evening performances — Leicester Square is often quicker.
By Bus
Several bus routes serve the area, including the 1, 14, 19, 24, 29, 38, and 176 along Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road.
