Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! — fully reconceived with director and choreographer Matthew Bourne — is now in its second year at the Gielgud Theatre. Following a sold-out premiere season at Chichester Festival Theatre, this intimate and imaginative revival opened in the West End in December 2024 to widespread acclaim, with the Financial Times calling it a “24 carat must-see” and awarding five stars.
Based on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, Bart’s score is packed with some of the most recognisable songs in British musical theatre: Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick-a-Pocket or Two, I’d Do Anything, Oom Pah Pah, and As Long As He Needs Me. This production strips back the spectacle of Mackintosh’s previous large-scale stagings (London Palladium 1994, Theatre Royal Drury Lane 2009) in favour of a more intimate, imaginative approach — designed by Lez Brotherston with lighting by Paule Constable and Ben Jacobs — that vividly conjures Dickensian London on the Gielgud’s compact stage.
Winner of the 2025 WhatsOnStage Award, with Simon Lipkin nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Fagin, Oliver! is booking until 4 October 2026. A Cameron Mackintosh in association with Chichester Festival Theatre production.

The Venue
Oliver! is playing at the Gielgud Theatre, one of the most intimate theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue. With a capacity of around 900 seats across Stalls, Dress Circle, and Grand Circle, the compact auditorium suits Mackintosh and Bourne’s stripped-back, imaginative staging perfectly.
Production note: This production contains gunfire and smoke effects.
Late arrivals: Every effort will be made to admit latecomers during the performance at a suitable point, but admission cannot be guaranteed.
