Shed Seven are an alternative rock band from York, England, formed in 1990. They were one of the groups which contributed to the Britpop music scene of the 1990s. The band’s original lineup comprised singer Rick Witter, guitarist/keyboardist Joe Johnson, bassist Tom Gladwin and drummer Alan Leach. Johnson was later replaced by Paul Banks, although a later lineup of the band included both Johnson and Banks.

Shed Seven’s debut album, Desperate Times, Desperate Measures, was released in 1994 and reached number 2 in the UK Albums Chart. The album spawned the hit singles “Disco Down”, “Going for Gold” and “On Standby”. The band’s second album, A Maximum High, was released in 1996 and reached number 1 in the UK Albums Chart. The album spawned the hit singles “Going Nowhere”, “Going Blind” and “Shed Seven”.

Shed Seven released three more albums in the 1990s: Nothing Left to Lose (1998), Keep Her Close (2001) and Happiness (2002). The band officially broke up in 2003, but reformed for a greatest hits tour in July 2007. Shed Seven continued to play shows around Britain periodically until releasing a new studio album in 2017 with the announcement of Instant Pleasures.

The band’s name comes from a railway shed that they saw on their way back to York from a gig. The shed was marked with the words “Shed 7”. The band thought the name was funny and decided to adopt it.

Shed Seven are known for their energetic live performances and their anthemic songs. They have a large and loyal fan base, particularly in the UK. The band’s music has been described as “a mix of Britpop, indie rock and power pop”.

Shed Seven are one of the most successful bands to come out of the Britpop era. They have sold over 10 million records worldwide and have had numerous hit singles. The band is still going strong today and continue to tour and release new music.
