Andrew Lloyd Webber receives Honorary Doctorate from Royal College of Music

Royal College of MusicEarlier today, Andrew Lloyd Webber was honoured by HRH The Prince of Wales and several outstanding figures in international musical life, at the Royal College of Music’s Annual Awards ceremony.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, one of the world’s best-known composers of musical theatre, and internationally acclaimed pianist Murray Perahia, both received their Honorary Doctorate from HRH The Prince of Wales, whilst violinist Nicola Benedetti was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music.

HRH The Prince of Wales, who last year celebrated his 20th anniversary as President of the Royal College of Music, presented awards to several others who have made significant contribution to musical life, before attending a short concert featuring performance from three of the College’s most exceptional, prize-winning, recent graduates; violinist Ben Baker, soprano Louise Alder and pianist Poom Prommachart.

Andrew Lloyd Webber said:  “I am overwhelmed to receive this award from the Royal College of Music, an historic British institution with close links to my family. My father, William Lloyd Webber, won a scholarship to the college as a young man and later went on to become a professor. This year would have marked his centenary year. My mother was a student at the college when she met my father and she went on to teach in the College’s Junior Department. My brother, Julian, and I also had the privilege of studying at the college and both he and I share happy memories of our time there.
