Billy Elliot the Musical Returns to the West End in 2027

The award-winning global phenomenon Billy Elliot the Musical is set to make a triumphant return to London’s West End, with performances at the Adelphi Theatre from 12 February to 31 July 2027.

Billy Elliot the Musical production ImageOne of the most successful and beloved British musicals ever created, Billy Elliot has been seen by almost 12 million people across five continents and has won more than 80 major theatre awards worldwide. Its return marks the first time the production has played in London and the UK in a decade.

Set against the backdrop of the 1984–85 miners’ strike in northern England, the musical tells the inspiring story of a young boy who discovers a passion for dance while attending a boxing class. As Billy pursues his dream of becoming a dancer, he challenges expectations, brings his family and community together, and demonstrates the life-changing power of art and determination.

Based on the acclaimed film, Billy Elliot the Musical features music by Elton John and a book and lyrics by Lee Hall. The production was developed by the original creative team behind the film and has become a landmark achievement in British musical theatre since its world premiere.

The show has earned widespread critical acclaim throughout its history. The Daily Mail described it as “a dazzling 40-carat gem of a show”, while the Daily Telegraph hailed it as “the greatest musical yet”. The Mail on Sunday called it “truly electrifying”, and the Sunday Express praised it as “pure magic”.

Returning ten years after its last UK performances, Billy Elliot the Musical promises to delight a new generation of theatre-goers while welcoming back audiences who fell in love with the production during its original run.

Tickets are now on sale for performances at the Adelphi Theatre, London, from 12 February to 31 July 2027.

Billy Elliot the Musical at Leicester’s Curve Theatre (May 2024), Chris Omaweng

This show’s central message of sticking together (one of the musical numbers is called ‘Solidarity’ for a reason) despite whatever life and the political powers that be might throw at people is, whether by default or by design (or both), highly topical. It gets a bit hammy in places, and rather more tears are shed than the rough, hardy northern setting would reasonably be expected to have. But there are some hearty laughs in a fiery, boisterous and splendid production that left me with the distinct feeling that this will be a show that will stick in the memory for a long time to come.

Billy Elliot The Musical is captivating and electrifying (May 2019), Terry Eastham

Overall, “Billy Elliot” deserves its reputation as one of the most captivating and electrifying shows in the West End just now. Even the programme is superb – probably the best I have purchased from any show with superb photographs and song lyrics it’s an excellently produced reminder of the show and at a price that is reasonable – it would be nice if all West End theatre programmes were so good. From start to finish it is a glorious display of the magic of musical theatre at its best and I wish another ten (and more) glorious years of success.
