Encore – An Evening with Heather Headley at Theatre Royal Drury Lane

December 12, 2013 Last updated: May 7, 2019 6:02 pm By Neil Cheesman

Heather HeadleyTony and Grammy Award winner Heather Headley has announced a special performance of Encore – An Evening With Heather Headley, at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Sunday 2nd February 2014.

Heather Headley played the role of Nala in the original 1997 Broadway cast of Elton John and Tim Rice’s award winning musical The Lion King. Since then, she has gone on to not only become an award winning stage performer, but also gained chart success with her studio albums.

Heather was born in Trinidad, spending the most part of her childhood there, until together with her family she moved to the US in the early 1990s where Heather’s love for the performing arts continued to grow.

When performing in The Lion King, Heather was asked to audition for the lead role in Elton John and Tim Rice’s next Broadway show together, Aida.  Her portrayal of the Nubian princess, Aida, gained her the praise of critics and the prestigious Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.  As well as other awards, Heather also received the coveted Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. During the same year,  she was named as one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People and Essence Magazine’s 30 Women To Watch.

Heather continued her musical success on the pop charts with her 2002 RCA Records debut album, This Is Who I Am which featured productions by several top producers. The two songs, ‘He Is’  and the album track ‘I Wish I Wasn’t’, were both Top 5 R&B and Dance chart hits. Heather received numerous accolades for This Is Who I Am, including Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In January 2006 she returned with In My Mind, her second solo album, with the opening title tune single becoming her first  number 1 hit, topping the Dance and R&B charts.

In 2009 Heather released ‘Audience of One’ for which she won the Grammy Award for the Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album. Heather has performed on many daytime and late-night shows, such as The View, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and The Late show with David Letterman. Heather was the spokesperson for the March of Dimes, leading their ‘I Want My 9 Months’ campaign, and also serving on the board of Directors for the Catalyst Charter Schools in Chicago.

In 2012 Heather played the lead role in London’s West End production of The Bodyguard, for which she received an Olivier Award nomination for her portrayal of Rachel Marron. 2012 also saw Heather release her CD ‘Only One In The World’.

In recent years Heather has added to her resume two of her most important roles: wife to Brian, and mother to John David.

The following statement has now been released.

‘’Regrettably Heather’s show at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London on 2nd February has been cancelled.  We had hoped that Heather’s album ‘Only One in the world’ would be released prior to the show date but unavoidable delays have meant that the album is not out yet and so the promotional tour must be postponed.  We hope to play the show at a later date, once the album has been released.   We apologise for any inconvenience that this will cause and are offering full refunds at point of purchase.’’
