European premiere of BLOWN YOUTH at New Wimbledon Studio Theatre

Blown YouthInspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Blown Youth asks what happens to the universe if a woman is at its center. All Celia wants is to play a great role. But unlike Hamlet, there isn’t one for her to inherit. Despite her sophisticated education and a profound intellectual commitment to helping other women somehow Celia, like her counterpart, cannot act. Still, it seems that her consciousness doesn’t only lie inside her. It seeds and sprouts amidst her twenty first century kinships: her friends.

A feminist response to Hamlet about 7 women. Blown Youth is an attempt at talking to Shakespeare while speaking from the point of view of queer women and women of colour – women who have traditionally found very little place inside of Shakespeare to express themselves – and using that as an engine to talk about the difficulties of carving out one’s own destiny without a legacy or a history that has recorded your presence or made space for you. Blown youth is an articulation of that struggle and attempts to hold all voices and all journeys – Dipika Guha

“Blown Youth examines the honest truth of a life lead by a dream and idea of something you wish to be but that you are not, allowing a dangerous scenario in one’s life to occur by the passing of time. Drawing a timeless comparison with one of the greatest literary characters of our time; Hamlet, we understand the struggle he experienced and identify direct parallels that are relevant today in needing to find the confidence within oneself to admit the truth” – Dominic Cooper
