James and Jack Fox in Dear Lupin at the Apollo Theatre

Dear Lupin starring James and Jack FoxA new show is arriving at the Apollo Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, from 3rd August, with previews from 30th July. Dear Lupin is the stage adaption of the Sunday Time’s bestseller and Humour Book of the Year, Dear Lupin, Letters to a Wayward Son by Roger and Charlie Mortimer. Praised for Roger’s hilarious and touching letters to his son Charlie, this book, after a successful UK tour, is landing in the West End for eight-weeks only.

Michael Simkins adapts the book into a fresh, engaging stage-comedy which showcases unknown stories of Charlie Mortimer’s (Lupin’s) life and his relationship with his father. Calling the book a ‘comic masterpiece’, Simkins said that this was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. The premise began almost two years ago, where Simkins worked closely with Charlie Mortimer to get down to the honesty and reality that they wanted the script to become by looking at past papers, belongings and such. By listening to Simkins, an actor in his own right, you can tell that he respects and admires the book and wants to provide the best stageplay that’s possible.

The two-hander play will be led by actual father and son, James Fox and Jack Fox. The production team express their luck and gratitude to get both these established actors in their production and expressed how one of the key-points to the show was the display of the father/son relationship.

With James and Jack, it came so naturally and brought the show up another level. The Fox duo joke of their family squabbles whilst working together, but you can tell that they have upmost respect for each other’s work and a genuine love, which producers must be looking at as a ‘lightning in a bottle’ situation.

Everyone is looking at this transfer to the Apollo with faith, gratitude and optimism and rightly so. They seem to have all the right hands in the pot and will hopefully cement this play in its own unique way, in West End theatre history. Hats off and best of luck to everyone involved!

It’s about a geriatric old Etonian hack and long suffering father, which ticks all the boxes for me.” James Fox

Jack Fox said on working with his father, “It’s brilliant to see Dad return to the stage, and for me, not just as his son, but as an actor it’s a huge privilege to learn from him. People assume as an actor you start as a fully finished article, but that couldn’t be further from the truth – it’s an honour to work with him. I hope the rapport we share in life will translate to the stage
