From January 8th, 2015, “Lewis Schaffer: American in London” will be called “Lewis Schaffer: International Man of Misery”.
I’ve lived in London for 14 years. I’m barely an American anymore. Even when I was in New York I wasn’t exactly “Mr. America” either. What am I, chopped liver? Definitely not pate. Of course the Leicester Square Theatre is
in London. You don’t need to call anything “in London” if it is taking place in London. You wouldn’t call the play “Les Miserable in London” or “Miss Saigon in London”, would you?
So this is the name. It is too late to change it: LEWIS SCHAFFER: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MISERY
The New York comic now living in London makes the worst of his bad situation by taking on the world.
Lewis Schaffer isn’t an immigrant. He isn’t a tourist. He isn’t here on business. He is a hostage. But to whom is he a hostage?
The longest-running solo comedy show in Leicester Square Theatre history.
Experience the horror and astonishment as this highly-strung New York Jew wrestles with Britain, with America, with you, his audience, with his own mind, and with the nature of comedy itself.
Find out why comedy fans go to see Lewis Schaffer over and over again; why Phds have been written about him; why documentary makers follow him around London; and why reviews of his work range from adoration to abject fear.
Every Lewis Schaffer performance is unique. Kate Copstick of The Scotsman wrote “One year I will go to every one of Schaffer’s shows and document the journey“.
“It’s a bloody good laugh and unlike anything else on the comedy circuit. Go see Lewis Schaffer.” Time Out London
“Schaffer is disconcertingly terrific. He is compelling, unique and most of all unpredictable.” Bruce Dessau, London Evening Standard
