MEASURE FOR MEASURE by William Shakespeare at The Rose Playhouse

Measure for MeasureFollowing the critically acclaimed success of their first production, RECKLESS, Heady Conduct are proud to be an official partner of SHAKESPEARE400 and present MEASURE FOR MEASURE, Shakespeare’s dramatic tragi-comedy at The Rose Playhouse. Fusing their distinct style and originality with the genius of Shakespeare’s writing, Heady Conduct wants to take audiences with them on a journey into the chaotic and intoxicating world that exists within the play.

Vienna has fallen into disarray, decadence and debauchery after decades of corrupt rule, with justice turning a blind eye. A chaotic city, full of hot heads and hot beds, driven by an alluring beat. The Duke has fled, appointing the cool headed, cold hearted Angelo to make things right. When Angelo sentences Claudio to death for breaking the law on his watch, Claudio’s virtuous sister Isabella is dragged from the nunnery to help. Angelo’s autocracy begins to waver in the face of the enigmatic Isabella. Purity has never looked so good.

Rising star Matt Darcy will be playing the role of Duke Vincentio after having recently joined Mark Rylance at the Duke of York’s theatre in the Olivier nominated, West End sell-out Farinelli and the King. Further casting to be announced shortly.

Rebecca Rogers, co-director of Measure for Measure and Creative Director of Heady Conduct says: “We’re thrilled and honoured to be part of the Shakespeare400 celebrations and can’t think of a more appropriate venue than The Rose Playhouse to be presenting our new retelling of Measure for Measure. The timeless themes of power, hypocrisy, sex, faith and justice continue to resonate today. It’s a fast paced thriller that sparks with life.

The Rose Playhouse is the only venue in the city where audiences can see foundations of the original and first Bankside theatre where we know Shakespeare’s work actually played. As 2016 celebrates the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s life, the historic importance of the venue has been recognised by Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen among others, with their contribution to two short films about The Rose Playhouse due for release on 23 April.
